At Second Home, biophilia isn’t just a theory, it’s a proven practice. By embracing the infinite possibilities of the earth and each other, Second Home is building a workspace that works for us.

Modern minimalism, a dynamic and desirable trend in many areas of art and design, has become a dominant approach to shaping the contemporary workplace. However, studies of global offices have revealed that these “lean” spaces come at the detriment of employees’ health, wellbeing, and productivity. In a groundbreaking study published by Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, researchers discovered that incorporating natural elements into indoor spaces significantly reduces blood pressure and eases stress and anxiety. Better air quality, an increasingly rare commodity in major urban centers, has also been found to strengthen employee cognitive function, with one study identifying as much as a 15% productivity increase.

That’s the difference just a touch of green adds – imagine what a forest could do. By collectively readjusting our mindsets around what an indoor space can and should look like, we can not only affect employee output, but also nurture both personal and environmental sustainability, creating working communities that prioritize the wellbeing of workers and the planet at the same time.

The co-working space Second Home has enacted these practices by constructing urban jungles within their city-bound offices across London, Lisbon, and Los Angeles, and welcoming a membership that represents backgrounds and experiences as multiplicitous as the plant varieties around them.

This partnership between environmental and interpersonal diversity is creating a deep well of creativity, collaboration, and authenticity to transform industries. “I met my future business partner at a social impact event hosted at Second Home,” says Emmy-winning producer Andy Robinson of Smith Robinson Multimedia. “Soon after, companies merged together and, as a result, our business is booming.”

At Second Home, biophilia isn’t just a theory, it’s a proven practice. By embracing the infinite possibilities of the earth and each other, Second Home is building a workspace that works for us.

Second Home is a case study in biomimicry in the workplace. Each global co-working location plays host both to entrepreneurs and creators – who take advantage of the advanced technical and social resources such as customizable work pods and access to collaborations across industries – and to urban jungles that highlight each city’s biodiversity, with some locations housing over 6,500 plants and trees indigenous to the region.

R.M. Christianson, queer author and longtime member, says, “The first time I walked in I was transported to a different world…where innovation meets nature and inspires you to go where none have gone before.”

Second Home embodies the benefits of a partnership between ourselves and our planet. It isn’t just a workspace, it is an oasis for forward-thinking to thrive; it is innovation realized.
