Job Description

As the restaurant for Second Home, La Despensa should exemplify our commitment to biodiversity and social impact by selecting vendors and farmers who support the health of our planet and by hiring and treating employees equitably and with respect. Second Home is running a 3rd wave coffee program. The Barista is responsible for preparing and serving coffee, tea, and other beverages to the members of Second Home. The Barista’s job is to engage with customers in a personable and service-oriented manner.

What you’ll be doing

• Greeting customers in a friendly manner and taking food and drink orders
• Prepares and sells coffee drinks by following prescribed recipes and preparation techniques for coffee drinks, such as, espresso, espresso lungo, caffe latte, and cappuccino.
• Preparing and serving food items such as soups, sandwiches, and pastries
• Answering customers’ questions about menu choices
• Promoting and recommending menu options to customers
• Taking payment from customers
• Keeping the work environment sanitary and organized
• Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
• Maintains a safe and healthy work environment by following organization standards and sanitation regulations.

Key Skills and Qualifications

• At least 1 year of 3rd wave coffee experience
• Strong communication skills with an emphasis on customer satisfaction
• Excellent listening skills
• People-oriented
• Organization

Bonus if you have

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred
• Prior café or coffee shop experience a plus
• Previous knowledge of dialing-in the espresso machines, weighing shots, and a proficiency at latte-art are excellent skills to have
• Familiarity with telephone, office, and point-of-sale software
