Lua Ribeira’s photo series Noises in the Blood is inspired by contemporary Jamaican dancehall ritual. Made in collaboration with a group of British Jamaican women in Birmingham, Ribeira recreated scenes from dancehall culture at the participants’ homes. Inspired by Carolyn Cooper’s book ‘Noises in the Blood: Orality, Gender, and the ‘Vulgar’ Body of Jamaican Popular Culture’, the project questions the narrow Western perspective under whose lens dancehall is observed.

Hear Ribeira and collaborator, dancehall artist Dinah Larmond, discuss the process of creating these collaborative portraits, and Dinah’s experience of British dance hall culture. The talk will be followed by a DJ set from Kemarr.
