Sheffield Doc Fest presents: The Changing Face of London

A Sunday salon exploring the connections of place, politics and culture in London from 1960s to the present day through world-class documentaries.

2-4pm: Welcome to Britain, Ben Lewin, 1976 (73mins) + Discussion

This powerful, ironically titled documentary deals with the appalling treatment of immigrants and refugees that was taking place during the seventies. It concentrates on the often absurd, byzantine system that can favour an exploitative entrepreneur over official advisors in assisting people gain legal residence in the UK.

4.30-5.30pm: The London Nobody Knows, Norman Cohen, 1969 (53mins)

An eccentric vision of late 1960's London offering a fascinating time capsule of the remnants of a bygone age before London’s extensive modern redevelopment.

6-7.45pm: London, Patrick Keiller, 1994 (100mins) + Intro

Neither documentary nor fiction, London is more than either: a chronicle of a year in the life of England's capital through the eyes of Keiller's imaginary protagonist, Robinson, and the unnamed and unseen narrator and relayer of his insights.

8.15-9.30pm: The Changing Face of London Shorts with filmmaker Q&A

A contemporary collection of short documentaries offering poetic and political mirrors of London in flux.

This event is part of Second Home's City Life Festival. Running throughout October, the festival will explore the relationship between urban spaces, communities and identities and champion London as a place of inclusivity and diversity.
