About Gabrielle Blair and the book
When Gabrielle Blair—founder of the blog Design Mom and a Mormon mother of six—published Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion in October 2022, the book became an instant New York Times bestseller and sparked a provocative new reframing of the abortion discussion. In a post-Roe world where the abortion debate resides in an irresolvable ideological divide, why haven’t we shifted the conversation to the singular source of unwanted pregnancy: semen?
The book–based on Blair’s 2018 viral tweet positing that “men are 100% responsible for unwanted pregnancies”– has a simple, revolutionary approach: Ejaculate Responsibly demands that men share contraceptive responsibility and become active participants in conversations around birth control. This could be in the form of getting a vasectomy (99.9% effective and reversible), using condoms and challenging the sexist pedagogy and judgment that surrounds their usage, and/or teaching men to pull out effectively.
In a series of 28 brief yet utterly convincing arguments, Blair deftly makes the case for moving the abortion debate away from controlling and legislating female bodies and on to men’s lack of accountability in preventing unwanted pregnancies.
Exploring power dynamics, presenting new research, and unearthing the sexism at the center of birth control, Ejaculate Responsibly offers a case for rectifying misplaced accountability on women’s bodies and a call for men to become active participants when it comes to preventing unwanted pregnancies.
