Bass in the City: Sounds Like London

An afternoon of discussion celebrating the influence of Jamaican bass line and sound system culture on London's vibrant music scene.

Through a series of interviews with some of our city's most celebrated artists, we'll uncover the cultural lineage of London's most iconic sounds – from Jungle and D&B to Dubstep and Grime.

The interviews will be hosted by prolific music journalist Lloyd Bradley, author of Bass Culture: When Reggae was King and Sounds like London: 100 years of black music in the Capital.

Speakers include:

Jazzie B OBE – DJ and music producer who founded the iconic reggae soul group Soul II Soul.

Chip Richards – Described as the 'international ambassador for Jamaican music', Chips joined Trojan Records as Marketing and Promotions Manager in 1973.

Mala – Founder of Deep Medi Musik and part of the duo Digital Mystikz responsible for the legendary London based record label and night DMZ.

Congo Natty – aka The Rebel MC is probably most respected as one of the pioneers of Jungle – perhaps the first uniquely UK-born bass music

Fabio – Drum & Bass Godfather Fabio has been a prominent figure in the bass culture music scene for over two decades.

Eddie Otchere – Best known for capturing the evolution of British bass culture and most notably the drum & bass scene as Metalheadz personal photographer.

Portia Clarke – Marketer, Curator and Music Consultant, Portia is the music programmer for Red Bull Music Academy to name a few. She has programmed and curated many events and festival stages, linking global brands with contemporary high profile artists – most notably in the UK market

This event is part of our Bass in the City Weekend – celebrating the influence of Caribbean culture on life in London featuring screenings, discussions, food, drinks, creative workshops and music from Reggae Roast sound system.

Bass in the City is part of Second Home's City Life Festival. Running throughout October, the festival will explore the relationship between urban spaces, communities and identities and champion London as a place of inclusivity and diversity.
