Epic Annette is a depiction of the life of Annette Beaumanoir told in Homeric-style verse. Annette, who passed away earlier this year, aged 98, lived a life full of heroism.
The writing’s form captures the brilliant and fierce life of a medical student who grew up in a world at war. From a young age, Annette was devoted to justice and equality. At 19 she joined the French Resistance and saved the lives of two Jewish children in Paris, before they were deported to the concentration camps.
Later, as a doctor and mother, she supported the Algerian FLN, for which she was tried for treason and sentenced to ten years in prison. Her escape, trial in absentia and decades living in exile, separated from her children, resemble the stories of great heroes who put their humanitarian beliefs before family.
